President's Report

It’s almost time….

As the weather gets even more beautiful and we remember why Arizona is the perfect place to live in the spring…..it only means one thing: Wedding season is approaching. Take a deep breath and let’s rock it!

At the end of January, I had the honor to attend this year’s Evolve Leadership Conference in Philadelphia with 3 other board members from our Phoenix NACE executive board and 9 student board members. This is a great conference where NACE leaders from across the US get together to learn more about how we can make NACE better for you, our members. We spent a lot of time talking about programs, membership, teamwork, etc. but one thing that really stuck with me was that we need to tune into everyone’s favorite radio channel, WIIFM “What’s in it for me”! So it got me thinking, what is it that you are looking to get from NACE? Why do you come to our monthly events? What can we, the Phoenix NACE Board of Directors, do to make NACE better for you? I really want to know! So please take a moment at this months meeting to tell me what we can do. Or better yet, shoot me an email directly. Our board is here for you.

I am really excited to have our NAU Student Chapter planning our February NACE meeting on February 21st at Moon Valley Country Club. We are honored to announce that Kevin Dennis from San Jose will be our guest speaker this month who will teach us all about Tech Apps and how they can help us plan better events and organize our life. Just a reminder that 100% of the profit from this months meeting will be donated to the NAU student chapter for scholarships to Experience Conference in July. This is an amazing opportunity for them to grow and learn for their future in our industry. So please come out and support our students this month by attending this fun program. I hope to see everyone on the 21st!

  With love and gratitude,

  Dawn Peterson, Phoenix NACE President

Meeting Recap

Arizona Alcohol,Traffic and Firearms

NACE members really learn alot at our monthly meetings! Here is a quick recap from our speaker Jared Ripens from  Arizona Alcohol Traffic & Firearms:

*  Auctions? No Issues - acquire a Special Events license and stipulate on the application Off-Sale Auction or both On-Sale consumption of alcohol and Off-Sale Auction. Additionally, Gift Baskets would be allowed in the Auction - ***NOTE  Off-Sale Auction Special Events licenses - the qualifying organization (the charity) shall not sell more than twenty cases of spirituous liquor annually under a special event license.

* Gift Baskets or Gift Wine bottles without a Special Events license? Not legally allowed on a licensed premise, no exceptions.

*  In a split premise, can a person take Special Event premise alcohol on to the licensed premise and vise versa? Although the statue does not make this concession, it is reasonably consistent that the DLLC does allow this. When a DLLC representative was asked if I could get that concession in writing I was told "No, because that interpretation could change." This means the official answer is both yes and no - sorry but that's the best answer I could get.

* Partial License Suspension - this is no longer allowed. If a group of people wanted to bring their own alcohol onto a licensed premise the licensed business is no longer allowed to suspend an area of the licensed premise - the licensed business must suspend the entire premise for this to be allowed.

Jared would be happy to hear from you and elaborate on a few things that may be of interest. 1 - (888) 723-7078

Member Highlight

January's Member Spotlight is Jimmy Davenport from Starz Entertainment who will be celebrating 25 years as a Master of Ceremonies & DJ in the Valley of the Sun this year. A performer from an early age, Jimmy gave his first concert on the piano at age 5.  He continued with music lessons and performances through high school and college in the 70's.  During the 80's he played music professionally before moving to Arizona in 1990 and starting work as a DJ. After almost 20 years with his good friend and colleague, Jon Citron, Jimmy purchased Starz Entertainment in 2012 and now has a team of dedicated, talented DJ's who continue to rock weddings and events throughout Arizona.

Hailing from the Philadelphia area (Go Eagles!) and raised in an Italian family, Jimmy knows all about good food, good music, and good times with family and friends. He is a long time member and past President of the American Disc Jockey Association, Phoenix Chapter.  After many years of attending and providing music for meetings, Jimmy became a full fledged member of NACE in 2016.  Jimmy is married 38 years to his high school sweetheart Cathy and they have one son, James who is 20.

He loves to binge watch TV shows and movies about the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character, Sherlock Holmes, the master of deductive reasoning!

Jimmy believes that it's a gift to be able to make people happy.  For weddings,he has the opportunity to share in one the most important days in the lives of his wedding couples.  There is something very special about being in an environment of joy and celebration and to know that he'scontributed in some small way to that happiness is beyond rewarding.  For other events like company parties, birthdays, anniversaries and more, he can provide a diversion from the challenges of everyday life.  Folks come to a party, they eat, drink, dance and sing: something they have been doing since the beginning of time.  in his words " I'm just here to keep it rockin' and then pass it on to the next entertainer.  I get asked all the time if being a DJ ever gets old.  Are you kidding?  Ask any DJ:  when you hit that perfect mix and everybody on the dance floor cheers, it never gets old! "
